The UK produces over 400 million tonnes of waste annually; a quarter comes from households and businesses, the rest comes from construction and demolition, sewage sludge, farm waste and spoils from mines and dredging of rivers. When I think back to school days, recycling meant the crushing of the collected drinks cans at the end of the school year to send off for recycling. There was of course a local ‘bottle (and can!) bank’, but the annual event of can crushing on the playground was one not to be missed.
